My Journey to an Intentional Life
I used to feel like my life was on autopilot, rushing from one task to the next without much thought or intention. I knew I wanted to create a life that felt more meaningful and fulfilling, but I wasn't sure where to start. Then, I discovered the power of small habits. Healing and growth doesn't always require leaps and bounds; sometimes, it's the consistent practice of small, positive actions that lead to the most profound transformations.
Over the years, I've experimented with different practices, gradually weaving them into my daily routine. These seemingly small changes have had a profound impact on my well-being, helping me cultivate a life that feels more intentional and aligned with my values.
If you're looking for ways to enhance your own life, perhaps some of these practices will resonate with you.
1. Nurturing My Spirit
I start each day with a few moments of prayer and meditation. Sometimes, it's as simple as sitting quietly on my balcony with a cup of tea, watching the sunrise, and expressing gratitude for another day. Other times, I'll follow a guided meditation or read my devotional. I also take this time to pray over my life and for my family and friends. Throughout the day, I aim to carry that same mindfulness into whatever I’m doing—whether it’s something as routine as washing the dishes or simply pausing for a few deep breaths during a busy moment. By staying present in even the simplest tasks, I remain grounded and connected to something greater than myself.
2. Moving My Body, Honoring My Health
Daily movement is non-negotiable for me. I used to think exercise had to be intense and time-consuming, but I've learned to embrace gentler forms of movement as well. Some days, I'll do a strength training workout at the gym. Other days, it's a Pilates class or a long walk outdoors. I've even started incorporating dance breaks into my workday! The key is to find activities I enjoy and make them a regular part of my routine.
3. Prioritizing Restorative Sleep
I used to underestimate the power of quality sleep, but now I understand how essential it is for my physical and mental well-being. I've developed a relaxing bedtime routine that helps me wind down and prepare for a restful night. I take magnesium (I HIGHLY recommend this brand), dim the lights, put on some calming music, and read a book. I also make sure to keep my room cool and dark, and I've found that using a sleep mask enhances my sleep quality by blocking out any stray light, (which, fun fact: encourages the production of melatonin - the sleep hormone, and promotes deeper, more restorative sleep.)
4. Soaking Up the Sunshine: My Daily Dose of Vitamin D
I make a conscious effort to spend at least 30 minutes a day outdoors, getting fresh air and sunlight. I love taking morning walks, enjoying my lunch outside, or simply sitting on my balcony and soaking up the sun. Being in nature always leaves me feeling refreshed and energized.
It's important to note that Black women are particularly prone to vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to a host of health issues including fatigue, mood swings, brain fog, and even depression. Soaking up some sunshine is a fantastic way to boost your vitamin D levels naturally. Your skin actually creates this vital vitamin when it's in the sun!
I encourage you to ask your primary care physician to check your vitamin D levels at your next visit and to consider incorporating a supplement into your routine, especially if you spend a lot of time indoors or live in a climate with limited sunlight. If you're looking for a vitamin D recommendation, I personally use this brand.
5. Speaking Kindly to Myself: The Power of Self-Compassion
Perhaps the most transformative habit I've cultivated is speaking kindly to myself. We all have an inner critic, but I've learned to challenge those negative thoughts and replace them with words of encouragement and self-compassion. It's a practice that requires ongoing effort, but it's made a world of difference in my self-esteem and overall well-being.
Of course, your own path to an intentional life may look different from mine. The key is to find practices that resonate with you and support your unique needs and goals. But it's important to remember that building new habits takes time and patience. Start small, be consistent, and celebrate your progress along the way. By incorporating these small habits into your daily life, you too can create a life that feels intentional, fulfilling, and aligned with your values.
